Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology

Founded in October 1958, Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology is a public organization under the leadership of Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. It is a local organization of China Association for Science and Technology and receives the business guidance of China Association for Science and Technology.

Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology consists of provincial society, association, research society, promotion association, city-level science and technology associations, enterprise science and technology associations and colleges and universities associations. It is a network organization system that has large coverage and contains nature science as well as comprehensive discipline.

By the end of 2016, there were 11 city-level science and technology associations, 92 county-level science and technology associations, 606 sub-district (community) science and technology associations, and 968 township science and technology associations in Zhejiang province. Science and technology associations at the city and county levels held 13,894 science popularization activities and carried out 12,500 practical technical training sessions. The number of participants (including scientists and engineers) reached 113,000, and the audience reached 5.62 million. The academy organized 935 academic activities, and the number of scientific and technological workers reached 96,000. There are 173 provincial societies with 231,000 members. A total of 21,000 people joined the societies in 2014. There are 1,423 enterprise science and technology associations with 143,000 members; A total of 48 universities in Zhejiang province have established science and technology associations.

City Government of Wenzhou

City Government of Wenzhou has jurisdiction over the social and economic construction of the main urban area and the suburb. The first mayor was Hu Jingjian. The land area of Wenzhou city covers 12,110 square kilometers, while the sea area covers 8,649 square kilometers. It now has jurisdiction over 4 districts including Lucheng, Ouhai, Longwan and Dongtou, 3 county-level cities including Yueqing, Rui’an and Longgang, and 5 counties including Yongjia, Wencheng, Pingyang, Taishun and Cangnan. The city has a registered population of 8.324 million and a permanent resident population of 9.3 million. There are 66 streets, 92 towns and 26 townships, 3,034 village committees and 632 committees (including neighborhood committees).

Named as “Ou” in ancient times, Wenzhou is famous for its mild climate. It is titled as national civilized city, national sanitary city, national garden city, national forest city, as well as national historical and cultural city. In 2019, the city's regional GDP was 660.61 billion yuan, with an annual growth rate of 8.2%. The total GDP increased by 5 places compared with the previous year, rising to the 30th in the country. Revenue in the general public budget reached 57.09 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 12.5%; the per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents was 60,957 yuan and 30,211 yuan, increase 8.7% and 9.9% respectively; the industrial added value above the designated level grew by 7.6%, fixed asset investment by 10.3%, retail sales of consumer goods by 9.6%, and total exports by 29.4%. The prevention and control of COVID-19 has achieved a major victory, and the economy has shown a V-shaped rebound since March 2020.

Zhejiang Province Bioengineering Society

Zhejiang Province Bioengineering Society was founded in March 1985. It is an academic public organization voluntarily formed by scientific and technological workers engaged in biomedical engineering discipline activities. It is a non-profit public beneficial organization supervised by Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology. The society aims to unite and organize science and technology workers engaged in biomedical engineering in scientific research colleges and universities and enterprises, to promote the development of science and technology enterprise in Zhejiang province, to stimulate the achievement in biomedical engineering field, to accelerate the modernization of biomedical science in our country, to promote the development of medical equipment industry in Zhejiang province, and make contribution to the development of medical and health services.

The Society now has an influential member group, and gathered a large number of knowledgeable experts with strong research and development capabilities (including the institutions of higher learning and the main leaders of scientific research institutes), many experienced entrepreneurs in production and management of the biotechnology industry, and a large number of outstanding students and young scientists who represent the future of the Society. Works of the Society involves gene engineering, cell engineering, enzyme engineering, fermentation engineering, biochemical engineering and other fields. Many scientific research achievements have been widely used in medicine, agriculture, industry, environmental protection and other important aspects related to national economy and people's livelihood. Besides, it act as the think tank of the government, make suggestions to the relevant departments, and make contributions to the development of biotechnology and the progress of human society.

College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering of Zhejiang University of Technology

The College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering of Zhejiang University of Technology was founded in 1981. It is the first college in both Zhejiang province and China to set up the discipline and major of bioengineering. Now it has two related undergraduate majors including bioengineering and biotechnology, and several master and doctoral degree programs. It has become a center for gathering and cultivating high-level bioengineering professionals in China, and enjoys high popularity and influence in the domestic and foreign bioengineering academia and industry.

The college has cultivated more than 3,000 graduates over the past 40 years, a large number of whom have held important managerial and technical positions in domestic and overseas institutions of higher learning, scientific research institutes, government organs, enterprises and organizations, and made outstanding contributions to the economic and social development.

The college has gain several awards including 2 second prizes for National Technological Invention Award, 1 second prize for National Science and Technology Progress Award, 3 recognition prizes for China Patent Award, 9 first prizes for Provincial Science and Technology Award, 3 second prizes for Provincial Science and Technology Award, and 2 gold medals for Zhejiang Patent Award. College students have won related prizes for many times, such as Gold Medals in China Internet + College Students innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, The Challenge Cup and iGEM; Grand Prize in National College Students Life Science Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, etc.
